Grey Owl

Grey Owl is a goat's milk cheese with a distinctive surface-ripened character, crafted by Fromagerie Le Detour in Notre-Dame-du-Lac, Quebec. Its name is a tribute to the pioneering environmentalist Archibald Belaney, who was affectionately called Grey Owl due to his deep appreciation for Native American culture.


Crafted using pasteurized milk and vegetarian rennet, this enticing cheese features an edible rind that is wrinkled and slate-colored, thanks to the application of vegetal ash, giving it a distinct, slightly sharp scent. When sliced, its rind's dark hue sharply contrasts with the creamy white interior. The cheese's texture is firm and somewhat crumbly, yet becomes delightfully creamy near the rind. Upon tasting, it reveals a luxurious, smooth consistency with a balance of tart and citrusy notes, making it an ideal companion to a dry Riesling or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
